Ugly Sonic Trends online following his cameo appearance in Disney + ‘s newest movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The reboot of Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers recently premiered on Disney +, including a slew of cameos from a variety of animated characters. Among them was a cameo from Ugly Sonic, or the original, more “realistic” design of Sonic the Hedgehog for Paramount’s 2020 film of the same name. In the film, the character is confronted by Chip and Dale (voiced by Andy Samberg and John Mulaney) at a convention, and his appearance caused “Ugly Sonic” to begin trending on Twitter.
Paramount released the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog in 2019, which received a significant backlash from fans over the design of the titular character, particularly his human-like physique, including teeth. Voiced by Ben Schwartz, Sonic was later edited, but this caused the film to be pushed back from its original November 2019 release to February 2020. “Thank you for the support. And the Criticism,” director Jeff Fowler said in response to the backlash in 2019. “The message is loud and clear … you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be .. #sonicmovie #gottafixfast. ”
Despite the initial backlash, Paramount Pictures’ recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which follows the events of the 2020 film and introduced both Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), the latter of which only appeared during a post-credits scene in the original film. Schwartz reprised his role as Sonic, as well as James Marsden as Sonic’s human friend Tom Wachowski and Jim Carrey as the Evil Doctor Robotnik. The third Sonic movie already has already been greenlit, along with a Paramount + spinoff series starring Knuckles.
Announced in December 2020, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a live-action / animation hybrid that takes place in a world where humans and cartoons co-exist. The film has been described as a continuation of the classic ’90s cartoon, as opposed to a reboot, and will follow the titular chipmunk Brothers who have grown estranged after the cancellation of Rescue Rangers. However, Chip and Dale must reunite and work together for the first time in years after they are called to assist the police in investigating the disappearance of several animated characters.
Apart from Samberg as Dale and Mulaney as Chip, Rescue Rangers features an all-star cast including Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, JK Simmons and Chris Parnell.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer and written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, Chip n ‘Dale: Rescue Rangers is now available to stream exclusively on Disney +.
