Artist Louise Olsen on her wardrobe essentials

What are three essential items in your wardrobe? Button-down shirts – I have some Celine grandpa shirts I bought them years ago and I still love them. Sneakers – Adidas, Prada, Alexander McQueen. And jackets. I love the Balenciaga “Hourglass” jacket, and the Oversized boyfriend jacket look – it’s comfortable and relaxed.

Any go-to jewelery? I feel naked if I don’t at least have a ring or pair of earrings on. Louise Olsen organic-shaped hoops, for example. I wear Dinosaur Designs, Georg Jensen, vintage pieces from my mum Valerie’s collection and pieces from our travels to Africa, Egypt, Papua New Guinea.

Can you remember a favorite outfit you wore as a child? I lived in these two Marimekko long, striped, T-shirt dresses with a matching bucket hat – I wore them for years until they had holes in them.

And your worst fashion mistake? Wearing heels that were way too high and made me walk like a crowd.

What was your first fashion moment? Going to Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson’s opal fashion show in the early ’80s. Jenny’s sister Liz was one of my schoolteachers and she took our class along, it was my first fashion show and it was Incredible. My eyes were wide open with excitement. The wonderful fabrication and prints – it was an iconic, Magical show.

Is there something you would never wear? Really high heels.

Is there a current trend you like? I love the relaxed nature of the Oversized trend, yet it’s still a bit tailored, it’s got a lovely edge to it.

Who’s your favorite fashion icon? I love Charlotte Rampling’s masculine yet feminine, elegant style. Rick Owens’ wife and muse, Michèle Lamy, is over the top, eccentric, amazing – a real pioneer. I love sculptor Louise Nevelson’s invention and creative spirit. Also Jill Davidson is an old friend who’s got a beautiful eye, wonderful style and elegance.

What do you wear on a typical working day? I’m very hands-on in the studio, so it’s usually paint-splattered jeans or a boiler suit.

What’s your favorite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I’ll be reading, drawing, swimming and chilling at home, so Alex and Trahanas shirt and shorts with Adidas slides.
